Starlink & AMAZON LEO (LEO)

Exploring Low Earth Orbit Satellite Internet: Starlink & Amazon LEO

Staying connected in regional and remote Australia has always been a challenge. Traditional fixed wireless and satellite services often struggled with speed, latency, and reliability. The good news? A new generation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite internet is changing the way people connect.

Two major players are leading the way: Starlink (already available) and Amazon’s Project Kuiper (coming soon).

What is Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Internet?

Unlike older satellite services (like NBN’s Sky Muster), which operate thousands of kilometres above the Earth, LEO satellites orbit much closer, typically around 500–600 km.

This lower orbit means:

  • Faster speeds – capable of rivaling city-grade fixed broadband.
  • Lower latency – crucial for video calls, online gaming, and cloud services.
  • Better reliability – less affected by congestion and weather.

Starlink

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, has thousands of satellites already in orbit. Customers in regional Western Australia are seeing download speeds between 50–250 Mbps sometimes upto 400mbps, with much lower latency than Sky Muster.

  • Monthly plans are available direct through Starlink.
  • Equipment is supplied by Starlink, with easy setup kits.
  • For professional installation, Future Technologies’ partner company Jim’s Antennas & Security Albany can assist with mounting the dish, cable runs, and ensuring the system is optimised for your property.

At this stage, Future Technologies does not resell Starlink plans. We recommend customers order their monthly service direct from Starlink, and use our installation partner for a seamless setup.

Amazon LEO

Amazon is preparing to launch its new Amazon LEO satellite internet network (previously known as Project Kuiper). This next-generation Low Earth Orbit (LEO) system is designed to deliver fast, reliable connectivity across regional and remote Australia as a reilable alternative to the Starlink network.

As of mid-November 2025, Amazon has over 150 satellites already in orbit, with the constellation expanding rapidly. Deployment is being accelerated through a multi-launch strategy using:

  • SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets to steadily build out the constellation
  • Blue Origin’s New Glenn system, which completed a successful second launch and first-stage landing on 13 November 2025, confirming its capability as a major heavy-lift partner
  • Additional launch providers committed over the coming years

These successful launches demonstrate strong rollout momentum as Amazon prepares for commercial service.

Importantly, the NBN has announced plans to adopt Amazon LEO (formerly Project Kuiper) from early to mid-2026 as the long-term successor to the current Sky Muster service.

What This Means for Future Technologies Customers

  • A new, NBN-aligned LEO satellite option will soon be available across rural and remote Australia.
  • Future Technologies expects to offer Amazon LEO plans on flexible, no-contract, month-to-month terms once the service launches.
  • All plans will include local support, local billing, and local service—avoiding the complexity of overseas platforms.

Why Choose Professional Installation?

While both Starlink and Kuiper are designed for DIY setup, many customers prefer professional assistance to ensure:

  • The dish has a clear line of sight with no obstructions.
  • Cabling is securely installed, weatherproofed and neatly finished.
  • Wi-Fi coverage in your home or business is extended and optimised.

That’s where our partner company, Jim’s Antennas & Security Albany comes in. Our team can handle installation, integration with existing networks, and provide support for expanding your connectivity.
